PROTEST HEAVEN 7/11: Chris DiMeglio Ensemble

07/11/2008 - 10:00pm

PROTEST HEAVEN jazz and improvised music series presents:

DiMeglio/Levin/McBride/Rosaly Quartet

Chris DiMeglio, trumpet
Daniel Levin, cello
Nate McBride, bass
Frank Rosaly, drums

Chris DiMeglio is a trumpeter, composer, and vocalist living in New York. He has performed at the Festival of New Trumpet Music, in the Aperto Music Series, and on WKCR's Live Constructions show. His first recording as a leader, "The Open Field" was recorded in July 2007 and will be released in the summer of 2008. Dave Douglas writes, "Chris DiMeglio's music is an astonishing combination of songs, stories, sound effects, and soloing. Chris is a talented trumpeter and composer creating a unique world that unifies jazz, classical and even radio plays. He needs to be heard." Chris is performing in a variety of new collaborations and is on the board of directors for the Festival of New Trumpet Music.

Daniel Levin began playing cello at age six. He has performed with Billy Bang, Borah Bergman, Tim Berne, Anthony Braxton, Rob Browm, Whit Dickey, Mark Dresser, Joe Morris, Joe McPhee, William Parker, Warren Smith, and others. Daniel has recorded as a sideman on Clean Feed Records, EMANEM, Not Two, and Rogue Art, and as a leader, on Riti Records and HatHut. "Levin has a sound that ranges from subtle and understated to aggressive; with admirable technique as a performer and a compositional concept that blends structure with freewheeling exploration, he deserves to have his name added to the short list of cellists who are making a mark in improvisational music." -John Kelman, All About Jazz Magazine

Born 5 May, 1971 in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, bassist Nate McBride was raised in Seattle and lived there until moving to Boston to attend New Engand Conservatory in 1990. His tenure in Boston saw the beginning of several long-running musical collaborations including work with drummer Curt Newton, guitarist Joe Morris, pianist Pandelis Karayorgis and reedist Ken Vandermark. Since this period Nate has recorded and performed widely in the U.S. and Europe with those musicians and others. In late 2004, Nate relocated to Chicago, and performs regularly with his own Boston-based Quartet; the Pandelis Karayorgis Trio; the mi3; Tripleplay; Spaceways, Inc.; FME; The Frame Quartet, and the Engines. In addition to the musicians already cited, he has appeared on record or in concert with a variety of other improvisers, including Mat Maneri, Joe McPhee, Paal Nilssen-Love, Jim Hobbs, Charlie Kohlhase, Allan Chase, Satoko Fujii, James Rohr, and Hamid Drake.

Frank Rosaly currently resides in Chicago where he has been involved in the improvised music scene since 2001. He has become an active member in many groups including Chicago Luzern Exchange, Rob Mazurek's Mandarin Movie, Fred Lomberg-Holm's Valentine Trio, Ken Vandermark's Crisis Ensemble, The Thread Quintet, Indoor/Outdoor, Dave Rempis' Percussion Quartet and his own octet, Kite, as well as other projects such as Rolldown, Wealthsource, Fast Citizens, The Ingebrigt Haker-Flatten Quintet, Matt Schneider's Straight 6, Princess, The Jeff Parker Quartet featuring JP, Nels Cline and Nate McBride, the Nick Broste Quintet, Matt Ulery Quintet, Softbeater! (one of frank's solo drumming project) and others. He has also been performing with some of Chicago's best musicians such as Jim Baker, Matt Lux, Kent Kessler, Tim Daisy, Guillermo Gregorio, Jeff Parker, David Boykin, Niki Mitchell, Keefe Jackson, Aram Shelton, Josh Berman, Bill Brimfield, Josh Abrams, Anton Hatwich, Jason Ajemian, Nate McBride as well as New York musicians like Steve Swell, Anthony Coleman, Alan Licht, Dominic Lalli and Matana Roberts, as well as Wilco's Nels Cline.

PROTEST HEAVEN jazz and improvised music series presents:

HeatdeatH

HeatdeatH is a duo from Minnesota that conjures up sound with guitars, drums and machines. Musically informed by Black Metal, Free Jazz, Electronic Composition, four track recording and pretty shit, their sound constantly unfolds and overlaps, searching melodically with great sadness and beauty, while overwhelmingly abrasive and terrifying all at once. HeatdeatH is the Void, Infinite Cosmic Despair, and the end of consciousness.

Sonic Circus (East Coast)

Currently fixated somewhere along the East Coast, Sonic Circus consists of Dana Jessen (bassoon) and Michael Straus (saxophones). Dedicated to today's music, their combined individual efforts include the premiers of over forty new works with performances at New York City's The Stone, Boston's Jordan Hall and Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center. Always looking to collaborate with non-traditional artists and musicians, they will be joined this show by turntablist DJ Dubble8. These three musicians, having all dabbled in the institutionalized world, hold graduate degrees in music from the likes of Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University and the New England Conservatory of Music. New music performed tonight will fuse electronics with live acoustic instruments and visual projections.
