In the fourth and final exhibition of Doug Fogelson's "Seasonal Project 2010," Neon
Wilderness Redux represents autumn. How does one encapsulate this season? It is
perhaps the most challenging and captivating season of the year as we close the curtain on summer and quickly slide toward winter. Sustenance becomes a key concern after the bounty of multiple harvests begins to wane, fall light shifts into equilibrium on the equinox and then diminishes until the solstice in late December, colder air and colorful leaves add to the sensorium and produce forceful emotions.

Autumn is a time for office workers to be productive. Summer vacation is
over and the holidays are right around the bend. It is a time for intellectual pursuits
and withdrawing indoors. As such Fogelson installs two immersive rooms of art for
consideration. In the front gallery viewers encounter flashing amber LED lights and
glowing neon lights. Mounted neon words (in autumnal colors) contrast painted words on the walls and everything is bathed in the animated amber flashing of the LED alert. In the rear gallery viewers investigate pickling jars with fruit and vegetable samples illuminated from below, listen to a swirling piano elegy, and bask in the glow of candlelight reflected in dull copper.

Playing with the title of Nelsen Algren's book The Neon Wilderness, Fogelson employs or re-presents signifiers from the past and juxtaposes them with our contemporary times. His stated goals here are to "instigate a primary emotional impact that can then be pondered at length" and "highlight the inability to preserve anything while expanding a consciousness of time."
